In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with Tony Moody, MD, J. Buren Sidbury Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at Duke (and also Madison's cousin) to discuss advancements in pediatric cancer research and why it is so important to continue to advocate for more research and funding. Meet Dr. Moody and learn more about why your support and advocacy makes a difference!
"Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Osteosarcoma is most often found in the long bones — more often the legs, but sometimes the arms — but it can start in any bone. In very rare instances, it occurs in soft tissue outside the bone." Madison lost her battle with Osteosarcoma when she was just 7-years-old. It is just one of several rare pediatric cancers that desperately need more treatment options. With the money raised in our first two years, Live Like Madison contributed $100,000 to help fully fund a trial for an Osteosarcoma treatment.
Statistically teenage boys are most at risk for this type of cancer. Madison was 5-years-old when she was diagnosed. While she was an anomaly, she was not alone. Our passion is funding as many trials as possible to offer more treatment options to kids just like Madison.
